Sustainability & Traceability
The story of Indian coffee dates back to the 1600s, when the legendary saint Baba Budan is said to have planted seven Mocha coffee seeds in the courtyard of his hermitage on the Baba Budan Giri hills in Karnataka. For many years, coffee remained little more than a botanical curiosity, spreading gradually through
backyard plantings across the region.
Also known as Dattatreya Peetha, Baba Budan Giri is a mountain range within the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Today, coffee in India is cultivated beneath a dense canopy of natural shade in the ecologically sensitive landscapes of the Western and Eastern Ghats - one of the world’s 25 biodiversity hotspots. This particular plantation is named after both the mountain range and the revered saint, and is situated on
Dattagiri Hill. The coffee cherries are harvested when fully ripe and deep red in colour.
After picking, the beans are wet processed, sun dried, and then dry milled before being prepared for export. The producer, Allanasons, brings more than 145 years of exporting expertise to its operations. The Allana family sources coffee from some of India’s finest estates and processes it at its own facility in Hassan, which has an annual capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes.
