About This Coffee

Thunguri Washing Station, part of the Kibirigwi Farmers’ Cooperative Society, is located in Kenya’ s central highlands. Near Karatina, it lies between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range which benefits from volcanic soils, cool temperatures, and reliable rainfall, creating ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. The station serves over 1,000 smallholder farmers, most managing plots of 200–300 trees alongside subsistence crops such as maize and bananas.

Our team of experts carefully accentuate the beans’ profile with a light-to-medium roast to ensure you experience a full spectrum of flavours in every cup.

Sustainability & Traceability

Sustainability at Thunguri is both environmental and social. The station has wastewater management systems, including soaking pits and recirculation channels, to prevent contamination of local waterways. Raised drying beds reduce soil contact and improve airflow, while shade structures help regulate drying times, minimising defects and reducing energy use.

On the social side, the cooperative model ensures fair payment and transparency. Farmers receive training in soil health, pruning, and integrated pest management, reducing reliance on chemical inputs. Demonstration plots and annual workshops promote climate-smart practices, such as mulching and intercropping, which conserve moisture and improve biodiversity. Seasonal advances for school fees and farm inputs provide financial stability, while collective decision-making strengthen s community resilience.
